ABOUT THE ASSOCIATION
The Association, founded in 1961 is a registered non profit charity dedicated to
the collection and preservation of British Columbia's Railway Heritage. Membership
is open to everyone and you are welcome to attend our regular meetings which are held
on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30PM at Rainbow Creek Station, located at the BCSME
site at the corner of Willingdon and Penzance in Burnaby, BC (four blocks north of
Hastings on Willingdon). There you will meet people from all walks of life and all ages whose
interest is Railways and Rail related topics. At each meeting there are reports of
the Association's activities and a social and entertainment period.
There is something
for everyone in the WCRA, from volunteer Tour Guide on our extensive rail tours program
to any number of skilled and unskilled activities at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park.
The Association publishes a monthly periodical which covers the activities of the
organization and rail news of the Pacific North West.
THE WEST COAST RAILWAY HERITAGE PARK
The major undertaking of the Association is the development of the West Coast Railway Heritage Park at Squamish, B.C. The WCRA's collection of 70 locomotives and cars as well as innumerable artifacts is located on this 12 acre attraction in a setting of unmatched natural beauty. The Pacific Great Eastern carshop of 1914 was moved to the site in the early 1990's and formed the nucleaus of the first phase of the development, which first opened in 1994. More recently, the railway station, built to original 1915 plans from the PGE, was constructed and the new town centre opened as a part of the phase two development.
The funding for Phase Two continues (see Full Steam Ahead). Yet to come to complete this second phase of development is the installation of the turntable which was donated by CN, as well as additioanl trackage. A further two phases of development will then follow. At the same time, volunteers are busy restoring cars and locomotives, creating displays, conducting tours and operaitng the 2.5 km miniature railway. The Royal Hudson #2860, which has recently arrived, will be a major restoration project for future years.
The Heritage Park is open year round, and 31,000 people from all over the world visited the Heritage Park during 2001.
