A Visit to the West Coast Railway Heritage Park - What You Will See

Velocipede

The track patrolman would have propelled the velocipede minutes ahead of passenger trains. Using flags and oil lanterns, he would warn of any upcoming dangers.

Today we have automatic block signals and radio communications coupled with sophisticated detection systems to warn oncoming trains of any dangers. Trains can travel at faster speeds than the first track patrolman ever imagined.
