WEST COAST RAIL TOURS—1964! - by Grant Ferguson
|
This is a shot of CP 8639 entering Field, B.C. from the east. The train has just come down off the "hill" and the units are in full dynamic braking mode. The box car directly behind the last unit is fitted with an icicle breaker on the roof. This steel bar would break off any icicles in the tunnels before they could do any damage to dome cars or piggyback trailers.
The shot was taken by myself on March 27 1964 during the WCRA Easter Banff Tour. We chartered a "Park" car and a "Manor" sleeping car. We had "Banff Park" and "Laird Manor" on the rear of the "Dominion". We created our own drumhead sign and used ex-BCER interurban headlights for track lights. Round trip fare was $29.00 and included train transportation both ways, sleeping car accommodations, meals on the train, and a chartered Brewster Rocky Mountain tour bus. I don't recall if the fare included a hotel in Banff. The tour bus was used for railfanning along the line between Banff and Field during the layover.
