The Tank cars in the collection have a liquid capacity of over 8127 Imperial Gallons.
Tank cars were designed to carry everything from molasses to gasoline. Usually once in a
particular service, such as transporting crude oil, they never carried anything else due to
the cost of cleaning them out.
With the advent of pipelines to carry oil and gasoline these smaller tank cars became
uneconomical and were replaced by the huge chemical tank cars of today.
