| PACIFIC GREAT EASTERN #273 HOPPER CAR

This type of car was used for carrying coal or gravel. In the days before
World War 2 when coal was king these cars carried the fuel of industry, heating and
locomotion from the mines to the consumer.
The railways themselves depended almost
exclusively on coal to fuel the steam locomotives. Fleets of hoppers did nothing
except supply locomotive coaling stations every 100 miles or so.
