PACIFIC GREAT EASTERN #273 HOPPER CAR
This type of car was used for carrying coal or gravel. In the days before World War 2 when coal was king these cars carried the fuel of industry, heating and locomotion from the mines to the consumer.

The railways themselves depended almost exclusively on coal to fuel the steam locomotives. Fleets of hoppers did nothing except supply locomotive coaling stations every 100 miles or so.
